“I believe that God made every human being in His image and likeness. I believe that God placed within each and every one of us the desire for relationship with Him and with others. This image of God in all of us is what gives us value”
I am Pastor Jeffrey S. Harley and I am very excited and pleased to join the PGM team as the Lead Ambassador. I am currently the Pastor of Harambe Baptist Church on 5648 Chew Avenue in Philadelphia.
I am excited to join the PGM team for several reasons. In November of 2014 I was asked by Dr. Paul Metzger from the Institute for Cultural Engagement New Wine, New Wineskins Theological Journal to write a reflection on the killing of Michael Brown in Ferguson, MO and the ensuing divide and conflict within the Body of Christ. I titled my article, “Rising Above the Fray”. I was the Education Chaplain at a Christian Rescue Mission at this time. My basic thesis was this: “I believe that God made every human being in His image and likeness. I believe that God placed within each and every one of us the desire for relationship with Him and with others. This image of God in all of us is what gives us value. Thus, as a chaplain in a context where people are marginalized and exploited, I believe that it is only through the gospel of Jesus Christ that we can work with the Spirit of God to restore and reconcile people back to God. When people are reconciled back to God and begin to experience His love and grace, they begin to see their own value in the eyes of God. The Triune God is always reaching out to all people to reconcile us back to the community of the Trinity. When we experience His love, we are dramatically transformed into new creatures in Christ Jesus
(2 Cor 5:17)”.
When I wrote this almost seven years ago I began to burn with a passion to see the reconciliation and oneness be a real and tangible reality in the Body of Christ in the City of Philadelphia. I made it my passion through prayer and fasting to allow the Lord to use me in any capacity and project to be a force and vessel of being the answer to Jesus’s prayer in John 17.
Jesus prayed in John 17:21–23, I pray that they will be one, just as you and I are one—as you are in me, Father, and I am in you. And may they be in us so that the world will believe you sent me. I have given them the glory you gave me, so that they may be one as we are one. I am in them and you are in me. May they experience such perfect unity that the world will know that you sent me and that you love them as much as you love me. (NLT)
I met Glenn McDowell in the summer of 2020. Glenn and I began to dialogue and pray. By the time Glenn proposed that I join the Philadelphia Gospel Movement Team, the Lord had been preparing my heart, mind, and spirit to partner with PGM in the service of the Lord to bring practical and tangible oneness within the Body of Christ in Greater Philadelphia.
I am honored and blessed to be a member of the Philadelphia Gospel Movement team. I am looking forward to seeing and talking with you, the Body of Christ, and coming together, pulling together, to build up the Body of Christ in our region.
Have a blessed day on purpose!
