A primary Philadelphia Gospel Movement question is: “what is it that we can do together to see Philadelphia flourish that we cannot do on our own.” PGM decided one of its teams would address a broken aspect of the city that many of us were praying for: the education of our young scholars.
As we heard the Mayor and School District identify reading by 4th grade as their top elementary priority, we launched an initiative called Family Homework Night (familyhomeworknight.org).
Family Homework Night brings 4 churches together in Brewerytown each week for a dinner and literacy time for K-3 students and their families. After dinner, usually 15 of so students read to or are read to by volunteers from these 4 racially and denominationally distinct congregations. With the pilot going well, we have already had interest from across the city to expand this program in the Spring!
Join us in praying that literacy will improve, churches will get to know local families, and lives will be transformed for eternity.
